Unlike the opposite guards, Paul is an incredibly calm guard and can be sympathetic with some inmates.

Some day, John Coffey, a massive African-American man convicted involving raping and killing a pair of young white girls, arrives inside prison, sentenced to loss of life row. However, much on the surprise of the various other guards and inmates, he or she is very shy, soft-spoken, and also a very emotional person. Bob reveals extraordinary powers by simply healing Paul's urinary region infection and resurrecting a new mouse only by the touch. Later, he cures the terminally ill partner of Warden Hal Moores. He requests to deal with the execution of Eduard Delacroix, offering that afterward, he will transfer with an administrative post at a new mental hospital. An agreement is done, but then Percy on purpose sabotages the execution: As an alternative to wetting the sponge employed to conduct electricity and create executions quick and powerful, he leaves it dry out, causing a disturbing and dramatic malfunction on the execution, leaving the inmate to suffer an incredibly painful death.

Meanwhile, a new violent, psychopathic prisoner named "Wild Bill" Wharton is here, to be executed pertaining to multiple murders committed after a robbery. In the wake of such events, Paul interrogates Bob, who says he "punished them bad men" and to show Paul precisely what he saw. John takes Paul's hand and says she has to give Paul "a part of himself" to ensure Paul to see what really happened on the girls.

Paul asks John what he ought of do, if he should open the threshold and let John vanish. John tells him there's too much pain on the globe, to which he can be sensitive, and says he is "rightly sick and tired with the pain" and is getting ready to rest. For his last request for the night before his setup, John watches the video Top Hat. When John is invest the electric chair, they, shedding tears, asks Paul to never put the traditional dark-colored hood over his head because he or she is afraid of the darker. Paul agrees, shakes his hand as being a goodbye, and John can be executed.

As an aged Paul finishes his history, he notes that they requested a transfer to your youth detention center, where he spent the others of his career. Elaine questions his statement that they had a fully grown son back then, and Paul explains that they was 44 years old before John's execution, meaning that they is now over 108 years. This is apparently a unwanted effect of John giving a new "part of himself" for you to Paul. Mr. Jingles, Del's sensitive mouse resurrected by John, is also still well — but Paul believes his outliving every one of his relatives and friends becoming a punishment from God pertaining to having let John always be executed, and wonders how long it's going to be before his own loss of life. The film shows glimpses of the future in which Elaine has given to and Paul is still moving into the retirement home.
